Grinding Wheels and Special Tools - A Pro Tip in Fixing Your Own Japanese Plane and Chisel
In this video, we are with some of the blacksmiths at Tsunesaburo who gave me some advice on repairing a Japanese plane blade and chisel. There is a tool that they use to clean the pores and reshape the surface of a grinding wheel that I thought was interesting.
This tool is called a dresser at it is specially made for grinding wheels. You will see this tool online and it is available from a variety of manufacturers. I have seen some correction / resurfacing tools for grinding wheels, but nothing like the one that was shown to me at Tsunesaburo.
I hope you enjoy this video. Thank you for watching.

    I found it surprising that given your woodworking skills as witnessed by your joinery, that you didn’t do the hand planing, butterfly keys, c channel installation etc yourself. But then it occurred to me that real estate and shop space is at a high premium in urban Japan, yes? I say this as I built custom houses including many timber frames for 18 years before gradually moving into custom furniture, which I continue with over 30 years later. As the joy is in the wood. And timber frames are for young men who haven’t had several joint replacements, so moving into furniture is a natural transition with age.

    Fascinating. It’s such a thrill for me to see for the first time how all of the edge tools that I have loved and used for so many years are made. The simple, deep integrity of Japanese craftsmanship is what makes their tools so very special.

    This is so very cool. I’ve been using Japanese chisels, saws and kanna in woodworking and carpentry for 45 years. They are on a level entirely to themselves. How fortunate you are to be there and be exposed to all the master craftsmen.

    In May of 2024 I was in Tokyo and was determined to visit a retail outlet and update my collection of chisels. Of the stores in the Tokyo metro area I selected to visit Kurashige Tools, located at an outer edge of greater Tokyo. Please allow me to note that I was absolutely astounded by the supply of chisels and other hand tools for woodworking. The store owners did not speak English, but where a nice as could be, and they understood that I could sort through their section of wood chisels and find what I sought. The chisels that I departed with are from the masters, and works of art. Last night I showed my chisel collection to a Japanese friend, and she was amazed with what I have bought and brought back stateside. Should we go with mail order or pay a visit?I stand by showing up in person and carefully selecting the tools needed. Getting to this store is not so easy, so please allow me to describe my preferred route. On the metro, heading west out of the major stations of "Tokyo" and "Shinjuku," take the Chūō Line to Hachiōji. A rapid train with few stops makes this run to Hachiōji. Then change lines and take the metro south to Hashimoto. Then change tracks and continue in the same direction just one station south on the "local" to "Minima-Hashimoto. Depart the metro and then turn right and head east. Down at the bottom of the stairs one can find a police box. Put one's back to the police box and walk straight ahead, due east away from the police box and down a suburban residential street for a few blocks. Turn left at the street with a Japanese 7-11 store. Then walk north for about five short blocks (about 6 minutes) until reaching an intersecting a large street busy with traffic. This seems to be the only major street running east to west. One way to identify the street is to note the at least three car dealerships. So, turn right on this busy street (stay on the sidewalk to the right side of the street) and head due east. One needs to walk down this busy street for a seemingly long distance that can take ten full minutes. In the distance, a bridge spanning north-south crosses the street, and the bridge can be identified from a distance and is colored green, with a shade close to oxidized copper. The tool store is located at the south end of this cross bridge. It's easy to spot. Right before the store, there stands an auto company selling Mini Coopers. The address is 5-Chome-1 Seishin, Chuo Ward, Sagamihara, Kanagawa Tel. seems to be 042-703-3320. The store is closed on Mondays, for sure. The people running the store were as lovely as lovely could be and so appreciative of my visit. The numbers of tools boggled my mind, and upstairs there is a collection of historic tools that create a semblance of a tool museum. ō ū. Ū Ō

    This kind of passion is so rare these days. Too much emphasis on turnover and profit margin, not enough effort on making things that are unique and stand out as beautiful in their own right. Planned housing developments here in the US are a great(horrifying) example of standardization and loss of quality favor of turnover and return on investment.

    What is that thin sheet of wood used for?

    • @cedrics1220
      @cedrics1220 27 днів тому

      I don't think it's used for anything practical. The main reason why these carpenters try to get the sheet of wood as thin as possible is because that not only shows their skill but it also is used to finish wood without any wood finisher on it. If the blade is adjusted correctly and is sharp enough, removing this little amount of material kind of "seals" the wood fibers and moisture cannot enter. That's why some Japanese wood structures have stood for hundreds of years without any lacquer or something similar.

    I wish I could share a laugh with the old man because Bro was struggling without clamps. That old timer had to step in and show em how it was done. Soon as I got into wood working I didn’t know how much all these guys relied on clamps. I never clamped or vised anything for 15 years as an electrician and never used power tools. First off it makes your back strong… hence the phrase” put some back into it” really your whole body and second I could feel what the old timer was feeling while our young friend here was looking like a toddler trying to open juice box! As a young man of 37 I gotta message to put out there and that’s “put some back into it”😊

    Thanks so much for these videos of your visits to the blacksmiths. I appreciate the amount of detail, your intelligent questions, and the video quality. I also very much like that in this and your other videos you focus on your subjects and their craft rather than yourselves. One of the things I loved from the videos of the three smiths is that you revealed their different personalities and approaches to their craft. They all seemed like folks I'd like to know.
